Bedford woman arrested when she fails to stop for a police officer

BEDFORD – A Bedford woman was arrested on Friday, June 2 after a Bedford Police officer stopped her Jeep Cherokee while driving south on State Road 37.

Latasha Baker

The officer said the driver 25-year-old Latasha Baker was traveling at a high rate of speed and was recklessly passing other vehicles. The officer was able to catch up to the driver that was stopped in the eastbound lane to turn onto 5th Street. The vehicle then turned and accelerated. The vehicle was traveling at 65 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone.

The officer activated his overhead emergency lights, but the driver failed to stop and continued to travel east passing X Street. The driver continued through the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and was waving her arms out the window. The vehicle then turned north on M Street traveling at 50 miles per hour. The driver eventually turned into a driveway at 29 Madison Street.

Baker exited the vehicle and attempted to enter the house. She was ordered to stop and was detained.

Baker told police she saw their lights at 5th and X streets but didn’t stop because her doorbell camera alerted her of motion at her home and she believed someone might have been at her home. When asked why she didn’t call 911 to alert police to a possible break-in, she said she didn’t know why but acknowledged she should have. Police found no evidence of a break-in.

Police noticed the odor of marijuana emitting from her vehicle. She told police there was a “cart” in the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, police found a vape containing a marijuana cartridge.

Baker was arrested on charges of reckless driving, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting law enforcement for refusing to stop.
