Arrest made after reports of an intoxicated woman stumbling around town

BEDFORD – A Bedford woman was arrested on Saturday, June 3 after Bedford Police officers were alerted to a possibly intoxicated woman stumbling in the roadway in the area of 17th and G streets at 9 a.m.

Officers were unable to locate the woman.

At 9:50 a.m., police were called to Ruler Foods on 16th Street reporting 56-year-old Debra Turpin had driven a black Jeep SUV into the lot and was now stumbling inside the store.

An officer located the SUV parked incorrectly, across several parking spaces. A witness told the office they saw Turpin leave the store and stumble north toward the Circle K gas station at the intersection of 16th and H Streets.

Officers located Turpin at 12:15 p.m. after being flagged down by residents reporting a woman was stumbling in the area of 14th and L streets.

Police found Turpin in the First United Methodist Church parking lot. She had a red Solo cup in her hand, was not wearing shoes, and was swaying and flailing her arms as she began walking toward 14th Street.

Police say Turpin appeared to be intoxicated. She told police she was headed “to the only store Ruler”. She told police she had parked her Jeep at the store the night before, but police say the vehicle was not there the night before or that morning while police were on patrols. Police also reported Turpin does not have a valid driver’s license.

Turpin went on to state that there was only lemonade in the solo cup and that she “hadn’t started” drinking yet. But police say Turpin smelled of alcohol and there was alcohol in her cup. She had an empty can of Mike’s Hard Lemonade in her purse.

She was then detained. Turpin began yelling, flailing, and attempting to kick an officer in the groin area.

Turpin is facing charges of resisting law enforcement and public intoxication.
