Orleans Kiwanis celebrating 100 years of service

ORLEANS – In Orleans, the Kiwanis have been helping kids for 100 years. You might have attended one of the club’s signature fundraisers or contributed supplies or money to one of the club’s various community projects in the recent past.

You probably know some Kiwanis members. You’ve seen them around the community, in church, or at the grocery store. Down through the years, they have served up everything from their famous Creekbank Potatoes, pancakes, peanuts, or ice cream to raise money for its efforts.

“We do it because kids need Kiwanis, said Club Secretary-Treasurer Robert J. Henderson. “In fact, our club selects projects after asking community leaders where our support is needed most.”

For example, the club has provided “Story Steps” in conjunction with the Orleans Public Library, donated books for the Orleans Little Library, provided volunteers to help pack Bulldog Backpacks, supported Clothe-A-Child, collected food for community food pantries, donated supplies for the Orleans Schools Essentials Project, and raised funds for multiple Orleans High School scholarships every year.

For many years the local club also sponsored the B.U.G. (Bring Up Grades) Program in conjunction with the Orleans Elementary School. For decades the club hosted a community Halloween Party, and an annual Honors Night to celebrate the academic achievements of Orleans students.

The club believes everyone can serve others — and benefit from serving.

Since 1923, Orleans Kiwanians have worked tirelessly to help raise monies for Riley’s Kids and many Riley Children’s Hospital-related projects.

This year the Orleans Kiwanis is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

“As we celebrate, we’re also looking for people to join us,” added Henderson. “We know life is busy — work, family, and other daily demands can interfere with even the best intentions. But we also know that more children than ever need what Kiwanis provides. We reach more kids when we have more members. That’s why we’re extending this invitation to change lives — maybe even including your own.
