Galactic Gather returns to Mitchell on July 21-22

MITCHELL – The return of Galactic Gather will be on July 21 and July 22, 2023.

Astronauts and special guests will include Astronauts: Joe Allen, Mark Brown, Tony England, Kevin Ford, Jerry Ross, and Charlie Walker. Also attending will be special Guests Lowell Grissom, brother to Gus Grissom; Mark Grissom, son to Gus Grissom.

There will also be a guest appearance from actor Joel Johnstone, who played Gus in the popular TV series, “Astronaut Wives Club” and Shelby Wilson, Olympic Gold Medalist.

The Gathering will kick off on Friday, July 21 with a dinner for all ticket holders at 6:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Community Building, located at 101 Tom Green Drive in Mitchell. Participants will receive a nice buffet-style meal while dining with all attending astronauts and special guests.

Guest speaker Joel Johnson and Olympic gold medalist Shelby Wilson will speak on achieving your dreams and there will be live music by Tracy Thompson.

 At Rome in 1960, Shelby Wilson defeated the Soviet, Vladimir Sinyavsky, to win the gold in the freestyle lightweight division.

In addition, each paid attendee will receive a photo signed by all attending astronauts. Upgrade your experience by purchasing a “dinner upgrade” ticket to be able to sit at the personal table of one of our astronauts during dinner.

Saturday, July 22 will begin with FREE tours of the Gus Grissom Boyhood Home. Come and see the home that Gus Grissom grew up in, as it was when he was a child. Tours will be given in open house format from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Grissom’s Boyhood Home. The home is located at 715 Grissom Avenue in Mitchell.

Photo opportunities will be available beginning at 1 p.m. at the Mitchell First Baptist Church at 722 West Frank Street and will close at 3 p.m. Come and get a photo with our special guests. One ticket will allow one picture (up to 5 people in the shot).

On Saturday evening, enjoy a night with the astronauts at the beautiful, historic Mitchell Opera House located at 217 North 7th Street in Mitchell, as they individually tell their stories of what it is like to travel, live, and work in space, as well as a screened question/answer session.
