Honoring U.S. military personnel on Memorial Day

INDIANA – Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces.

A big misconception is that Memorial Day is just about going to the beach or having a cookout with your family.

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30.

Memorial Day was first recognized as Decoration Day and towns across the country would honor those who died in the Civil War. In the 1860s women would decorate graves for fallen veterans.

To honor those lost many Americans visit local military cemeteries, volunteer at various organizations, or donate to an important cause.

Additionally, Memorial Day is known as the unofficial start of summer and people spend time with loved ones and friends.
