Sullivan County Public Library to host Indiana Album Scan-a-Thon this Saturday

SULLIVAN – On Saturday, April 29, from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., the Sullivan County Public Library will host an Indiana Album Scan-A-Thon at the Sullivan County History Museum.

The Indiana Album copies privately owned photos, and other documents, and brings Hoosiers’ collective history to the web, one image at a time.

The public is encouraged to dig through their shoeboxes and albums and to bring Indiana-related items to the museum this Saturday.

Volunteers will make high-resolution scans while lenders wait. The scans and catalog records will later be uploaded into the Indiana Album online catalog. All items will be carefully handled and immediately returned to the owners. Make a reservation or learn how to submit scans by contacting The Indiana Album at 317-771-4129 or via email.

“Many lenders are too selective, mistakenly believing that their family items or recent snapshots are not significant enough,” says Indiana Album director Joan Hostetler. “We not only document history with a capital H but also the everyday person’s journey. We accept photos up to the present day. After all, history doesn’t have an end date. We seek images of activities such as laundry day, farming, construction, church and club events, or interesting people, including portraits of prominent or pioneer residents, people participating in activities, or great snapshots of everyday life. Of particular interest are visuals of houses, commercial structures, businesses, street scenes, and images showing ethnic diversity.”

The Indiana Album, a nonprofit organization, was formed in 2012 and has digitized over 24,000 items shared by nearly 500 lenders.

The Sullivan County History Museum is located at 10 S. Court St. in Sullivan.
