Death investigation underway at Bear Run Coal Mine

CARLISLE – Early Thursday afternoon, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency medical call to Bear Run Coal Mine in Carlisle for an employee-involved accident around 1 p.m. on Thursday, according to Sheriff Jason Bobbitt.

Upon arrival, medical personnel on the scene told officers that an employee had been struck by a large piece of equipment. The employee was pronounced dead on the scene before officers arrived.

All mining operations were suspended while the Mining Safety and Health Administration conducted an investigation into the accident.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time.
