Stars card 3-2 triumph over Jennings County

BNL’s Bella Stigall combined with Mallory Pride for a straight-set win at No.1 doubles on Thursday.

NORTH VERNON – Bedford North Lawrence swept the doubles while posting a 3-2 road victory over Jennings County during girls high school tennis action on Thursday.

The Stars (6-3 with three straight wins) also got a key victory at No.3 singles to conquer a Hoosier Hills Conference foe.

Bella Stigall and Mallory Pride were dominant at No.1 doubles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Makenzey Carr and Joline Chen. At No.2, Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge rolled past Jocelyn Valdovinos and Gabi Morin 6-1, 6-1.

“Doubles were strong and were the better teams on the court,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “Italy (Lewis) stayed solid to bring that team win home for us. I give her a hard time about moving her feet and being quicker. If she starts listening, she will be tough to beat.”

Lewis topped Mia Silvey 6-3, 6-1 at No.3 singles.

The Panthers were tough at the top of the singles lineup. Tatum Brown clipped Becca Epping 6-2, 6-2 at No.1, while Kaydence Lowman edged Ashlyn Wever 6-4, 6-2 at No.2.

“Jennings is always very strong at singles,” Stigall said. “That was definitely the case again. Becca played a good match. She’s frustrated that she’s not always winning, that’s what happens when you play that top spot. She’s playing well and I can’t be upset with that.

“Ashlyn played so hard. Nobody out-tries Ashlyn. She’s still figuring things out and she listens so well, adapts and make changes. Her time for a big win will come.”

The Stars will host the Rob Spencer Invitational, facing Martinsville and Evansville Christian, on Saturday.
