MONTGOMERY – With over half of its usual lineup absent, Bedford North Lawrence finished 12th in the Washington Invitational at Country Oaks during boys high school golf action on Saturday.

The Stars, with prom festivities accounting for most of the roster shuffling, fired a team total of 368. Bloomington South, with three golfers among the top five individuals, posted 297 to win the regional-preview tournament.

Tyler Bellush paced BNL with 86 while Houston Corbin carded 90.

“We played without (Jett) Jones and (Colton) Staggs, and Dillon Lewis is out with an injury,” BNL coach Jeff Hein said. “It was good experience for some of our younger guys today. The course was set up like the regional with back tees and tough pins.”

Carson Root posted 95 and Drew McKee completed the BNL scoring with 97.

“The more often we play there, the better we should get,” Hein said. “When we play there later in the season, it will be with our full team and should help prepare us for the postseason.

“Just like last year, it appears the third spot (at the regional) is open. South and Evansville North should get out to state. Jasper appears to be the favorite at this time for the third spot. Our goal has to be to be better than them in June.”

Happy Gilmore paced the Panthers with an even-par 72, a strong score matched by Gibson Southern’s Peyton Blackard and Jasper’s Caleb Schnarr for medalist honors.

BNL will return to full strength when it visits New Albany on Thursday.
