OWEN CO. — McCormick’s Creek State Park is expected to reopen on Friday after an EF-3 tornado ripped through the park’s campground. Brett and Wendy Kincaid were killed during the storm. The couple was camping in a trailer at the campground when the tornado hit.
Park officials reported it took crews two days to clear the roadways to the campground after thousands of trees were blown to the ground.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said initial rescue efforts at the campground had to be done almost entirely on foot.
Park officials said 38 campgrounds were occupied the night of the storm. Campers were warned of the approaching storm before it hit.
Officials say the park and inn are scheduled to reopen on Friday. The campground will remain closed through the end of April to remove debris from the storm and make repairs.
DNR officials are attempting to reach everyone who had reservations at the campground to reschedule them.
The investigation into the deaths of the two campers is ongoing.
