A dog and two cats perished in a house fire, Bedford firefighters are still on the scene battling hot spots

BEDFORD – A dog and two cats perished in a house fire at 1316 Q Street this morning. The owner, whose name is not being released at this time, was at home and escaped uninjured.

No firefighters were injured battling the blaze.

According to Bedford Fire Department Chief John Hughes, the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene when the fire was reported at 7:13 a.m.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze and protect nearby structures.

“There was heat damage to the neighbor’s house and to a garage across from the home in the alley,” added Chief Hughes. “The roof fell in on the house and firefighters are currently battling hot spots under the debris.”

The home was destroyed. The American Red Cross was alerted to provide assistance to the homeowner.

Firefighters from all three stations responded with three engines and the rescue truck, and Chief Hughes responded to the scene along with Bedford Police officers, Street Department crews, and an IU Lifeline Ambulance crew. Street Department crews blocked off streets so firefighters could run hoses from fire hydrants to the burning house.

Chief Hughes said it has been a cold and long morning for firefighters.

“I would like to give a giant thank you to Starbucks and McDonald’s for providing breakfast sandwiches and coffee,” added Chief Hughes. “It was a big help. We had firefighters who were hungry and cold this morning and this was a huge help.”
