Firefighters battle fatal fire in downtown Washington

WASHINGTON – One woman has died following a fire in an apartment building in downtown Washington.

Fire crews were called to a fire on 3rd Street just after 8:30 a.m. this morning at an apartment building near Third and Main streets.

The building used to be the location of the old Hideaway Tavern. Vincennes firefighters were reportedly called in to assist the Washington Fire Department.

Washington Fire Chief Steve Walden has not released the identity of the deceased female.

A second apartment was occupied when the fire started but the occupants were able to get out uninjured.

The State Fire Marshal was alerted and responded to the scene.

Main Street was shut down for two blocks from Third Street to allow crews to battle the blaze.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the apartment building, however surrounding buildings could have significant smoke and possible water damage. Chief Walden says the apartment building could be a total loss.

Chief Walden says firefighters will remain on the scene to watch battling hot spots and to make sure the fire doesn’t rekindle.
