BNL’s Gabhart wins two events in HHC meet

BNL’s Emma Gabhart was a double winner during the HHC meet on Saturday.

SEYMOUR – Bedford North Lawrence senior Emma Gabhart capped her career with two victories during the Hoosier Hills Conference girls swimming meet on Saturday at Seymour.

Gabhart touched first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:13.74, then backed that up with a win in the 100 butterfly (59.96).

“Emma ended her HHC career undefeated,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “I don’t know if we have had a girl go 6-0 or better in their career. Certainly nobody in a very long time.”

The Stars finished seventh in the team standings. BNL’s other top finish came from the 200 medley relay (Ava Lipp, Gabhart, Cookie King and Shelby Slaughter), which came in second in 2:02.15. Floyd Central won that race in 1:57.97. BNL totaled 124 points.

“Unfortunately we finished last,” Young said. “Never happy with that, especially since we didn’t do what we should have in the 400 relay.

“We train through conference with our eyes on the sectional, so we are going to hopefully take away some opportunities to get better as we head toward the big meet in Jasper. The girls will begin taper after this week. The good news is we are still performing around season and lifetime best times. So I fully expect some serious time drops in Jasper. No tickets to state are punched at the HHC meet.”

Floyd’s Savanna Liddle was a double winner in the 100 free (55.33) and 50 free (25.15). The Highlanders won their sixth straight HHC team title with 383 points, followed by Jeffersonville (198) and Seymour (184).

The Stars will host Seymour and celebrate Senior Night on Tuesday.
