Man arrested after a report of a physical altercation at an apartment complex

BEDFORD – A Solsberry man was arrested on Thursday, December 8th after Bedford Police officers were called to a physical altercation taking place at an apartment in the 1000 block of I Street.

When officers arrived at the top of the stairways in the building they could hear arguing. Officers knocked on the door of an apartment and a male answered the door. The male told officers there were two other men in the apartment.

One officer spoke to the male who answered the door in the hallway while other officers entered the apartment.

They found one man in a back bedroom laying on a bed covered with a sheet and pillows trying to hide from officers. The man told police he had been sleeping. But there was a plate of hot food next to the man.

The man was asked if he had been in an argument. The man repeatedly told police he was sleeping and was charged with the officers and was not willing to give a statement.

Police then spoke to the other male in the apartment. Police say that man 53-year-old Gary Sergent was intoxicated.

While trying to obtain a statement from Sergent he began yelling at officers. He was told multiple times to stop yelling. He continued to yell and refused to stop. He then got into one of the officer’s faces and continued to yell.

Officer then detained Sergent.

The caller who reported the fight told police he heard Sergent threaten to kill one of the men in the apartment. He then heard who he believed was Sergent fall down the stairs before calling the police.

Sergent was transported to the Bedford Police Department where he continued to be uncooperative with the officers. He refused to exit the police car and had to be forcibly removed from the car.

While exiting the patrol car at the jail, Sergent cleared his throat and then lunged at an officer as if he was going to spit on him. The officer had to push Sergent’s face from him to avoid being spit on.

Sergent faces charges of resisting arrest by force, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct.
