Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market proves Indiana is about more than corn

BLOOMINGTON – “There’s More Than Corn In Indiana!” Its identity within the “Corn Belt” however, may hide Indiana’s agricultural diversity. Indiana ranks among the top five states in the production of tomatoes, cantaloupes, watermelons, peppermint, and spearmint, and is one of the nation’s major producers of cucumbers, snap beans, apples and blueberries.

Over six percent of all watermelons grown in the U.S. each year are grown in Indiana. Consider the following fact: The watermelon fruit is about 90 percent water! Best of all, watermelons were sighted at last Saturday’s Farmers’ Market!

Dale and Vicki Marchino of Marchino’s Farm take care of the maintenance and harvesting of their seven-acre produce garden. Dale grew up in Knox County, Indiana, and he learned all aspects of the farming life from his father and grandfather.

Dale started farming himself around 1975. He began selling at the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market in 2001. He and Vicki enjoy the whole scene of the Market, from the nice customers to the vendors. Stop by Marchino’s Farm stand this Saturday. Dale plans to bring what might be his final harvest of watermelons!

Saturday’s performances at the Farmers’ Market features the return of The Modest Trio. The Modest Trio is comprised of Mark Wiedenmayer on the keyboard, Susie Sullivan on Ukulele and drums, and Leah Savion on Ukulele. The Modest Trio will perform this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. on the Circular Stage.
