Senator Braun releases statement on President Biden’s proposed independent contractor rule

WASHINGTON – Senator Mike Braun today released the following statement on President Joe Biden’s proposed independent contractor rule, which would stifle the growth of the gig economy and potentially force many employees who set their own schedules as independent contractors to become employees.

Senator Mike Braun

“President Biden isn’t just making your paycheck worth less, he’s also making it harder to earn a second income as an independent contractor. Nearly 60 million Americans worked in the gig economy last year, and this rule will stifle growth in this important new sector of our economy and further strain supply chains that rely on independent contract labor to meet seasonal spikes in demand like trucking and logistics.”

The proposed rule would provide guidance on classifying workers and seeks to combat employee misclassification. Misclassification is a serious issue that denies workers’ rights and protections under federal labor standards, promotes wage theft, allows certain employers to gain an unfair advantage over law-abiding businesses, and hurts the economy at-large.
