Updated: Police searching undergrown sewer system for a barricaded man armed with a possible gun

BLOOMINGTON — IU Police continue to monitor the area of Dunn Meadows and Indiana Avenue – avoid the area.

Bloomington Police are currently searching the underground sewer system for a barricaded man who is believed to be armed with a gun.

People may see smoke emerging from the sewer drains as a result of the bangs being used. Police activities remain ongoing. People south of 3rd Street to the area of 1st and Walnut streets may hear loud bangs. Officers continue to ask everyone to avoid the area.

Franklin Hall will remain closed until Wednesday, September 21.

Earlier, Indiana University Bloomington reported an armed person entered the storm drain off campus near 1st and Walnut streets. They have the area contained.

Police noted that no shots have been fired.

IU Police are monitoring an exit to the storm system on the IU campus and as a precaution has evacuated a building in that area. The campus community is safe.

The Bloomington Police Department is asking the community to avoid the area between 1st Street to 3rd Street and Morton Street to Lincoln Street.

BPD said officers are currently searching the underground sewer system for the man. The department is working with utilities to determine which tunnels a person could fit in.
