Lawrence County students learn about Constitution

BEDFORD – Lawrence Circuit Court Judge Nathan G. Nikirk and Attorney Jim Pittman who is also a member of the Bedford Noon Lions Club recently visited Oolitic Middle School, Bedford Middle School, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School, and the Lawrence County Independent School to commemorate Constitution Day.

Judge Nikirk speaks with students at LCIS.

In 2004, Senator Robert Byrd added an amendment to the federal spending bill mandating that all educational institutions receiving federal funds offer Constitution Day programming on or about September 17th each year.

The Indiana Supreme Court began offering Constitution Day school programming in 2005 and encourages judges to participate across the state.

The Bedford Noon Lions Club provided more than 350, 8th graders with a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution.

“I was very impressed with the questions and responses from students. As a former social studies teacher, I really enjoy getting back into the classroom to teach about the Revolutionary War, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights,” said Judge Nikirk.
