Backpacking basics and terrific trails

BEDFORD – If you’ve thought about trying backpacking but didn’t know where to start, this is the session for you. Join the session at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, at the Otis Park Bath House to talk about backpacking, hiking, and getting outdoors.

Teena Ligman and Summer McDuffee will talk about basic equipment needed to backpack and will bring examples of what they use. Both women have been backpacking for several years, so can offer tips on how to get started and how to train for a backpacking trip. They will discuss a variety of gear and suggest what you might want to try. They can also suggest exercises to strengthen muscles to avoid injuries.

Ligman and McDuffee have hiked many trails in southern Indiana and can suggest hiking and backpacking trails to try both locally as well as further afield.  Bring your questions, they hope to inspire more people to get out on the trails.

The free, one-hour educational program will be presented in the historic Otis Park Bath House.  The shelter house, at 607 Tunnelton Road in Bedford, is enclosed. The program is part of the Bedford Park Outdoor Series.  Please RSVP for the program by March 25th at 812-275-5692 to help the staff ensure they have enough handouts and chairs ready.

Also mark your calendar for Tuesday, April 26, when the Outdoor Program Series will feature a program on Hoop Houses led by Whitney Baldwin, Hannah Martin, and Kathy Bodkin. This program will be at the Hoop House at the Community Garden on 416 H Street in Bedford.
