SCOTTSBURG – Bedford North Lawrence recorded three wins during the second day of the Warrior Classic on Wednesday.

The Stars bounced back with victories over Milan (36-30), Southwestern (42-6) and Columbus East (36-28). They also finished in a 36-36 deadlock with West Washington but fell short on the tiebreaker.

While the majority of matches were decided by forfeits, BNL had individual stars. Jorj Filler finished the two-day event with a sparkling 8-1 record at 120 pounds, while Jayden Johnson (113) and Gabe Nelson (132) both won seven times.

“Jorj had a great couple of days,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “He is looking sharp and focused, and this is the time of year we want to see that coming out. Jayden had one of the fastest pins today at 11 seconds. When Jayden comes out with all cylinders, he is hard to handle. Gabe is looking tough as we head toward conference and the sectional.”

Filler flattened Jaden Griffith in 55 seconds while Jaxon Powell pinned Evan Walls in 1:03 at 160 in the match with West Washington. Javi Paredes had BNL’s only victory on the mat against Milan, as he took down Kyle Gotts in 3:27 at 220.

Isaac Strange had BNL‘s only action win against Southwestern as he stopped Trevor Wood in 26 seconds at 170.

The Stars had four wins against the Olympians. Johnson whipped Dominic Baker in 11 seconds, Filler decked Braden Isbell in 30 seconds, Nelson hammered Rohan McWilliams in 1:28, and Powell stopped Eric Duncan in 1:19.

“There were individual matches that were also great to see,” Branam said. “Jaxon looked great in his matches against West Washington and Columbus East, getting that first period pin both times. Javi, someone who has stepped up as a leader with both Hunter Morris and Gunner Connaughton out injured, had a great match against Milan. Isaac Strange had a pin in under 30 seconds. All of these guys have taken some lumps this season, so seeing them come back, keep pushing forward and keep fighting for those wins makes me happy as a coach.”

BNL will visit Mitchell on Jan. 6.
