SCOTTSBURG – Bedford North Lawrence went 0-5 during the opening day of the Warrior Classic at Scottsburg.
The Stars, missing four starters in the expected lineup, dropped decisions to Lawrenceburg (40-18), North Harrison (54-24), Floyd Central (65-18), Scottsburg (54-18) and Jeffersonville (69-12).
“Today was tough,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “Giving each team 30 points right off the bat makes things tough. So it’s important to focus on individual matches on these days, and overall, I think we wrestled well. A lot of these wrestlers are learning things every match, and I see growth every time we step out on the mat.”
BNL had two winners on the mat against Lawenceburg. Jorj Filler pinned Javier Payne in 1:38 at 120 pounds, and Gabe Nelson smacked down Ben Heath in 1:03 at 132. Filler (pinning Caden Cooper in 42 seconds), Nelson (trapping Gunner Pate in 42 seconds) and Mark Mason (stopping Brett Benkowski in 1:41 at 152) were winners against North Harrison.
The Stars got wins from Jayden Johnson (pinning Caden Cadle in 5:55 at 113), Filler (toppling Karli Neathammer in 1:40) and Jaxon Powell (smashing Jake Growell in 1:55 at 160) against the Highlanders. Isaac Strange had the only action win against Scottsburg, trapping Skyler Hamilton in 41 seconds at 160.
Filler (38 seconds over Elijah Snow) and Nelson (1:28 over Hunter Baxley) had the only BNL wins against the Red Devils.
“Jorj had a really fantastic day, going 5-0,” Branam said. “He looked sharp and ready to wrestle from match one. It’s great to see all of Jorj’s hard work paying off on the mat. I hope to keep it going on Day 2.
“Jayden Johnson ended the day 4-1, and we’re hoping to see him do even better on Day 2. Jayden is just a freshman and got into the lineup late in the season, but has shown tremendous potential.”
The Stars will return to Scottsburg for the second day of matches (four total) on Wednesday.
