Indiana State Police requested to investigate officer-involved shooting

PORTER CO. – On Wednesday, November 3, the Indiana State Police District 13 Criminal Investigations Division was contacted by the Porter County Sheriff’s Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred at 138 South 450 West in rural Porter County. 

At approximately 2:00 p.m., Porter County Police arrived at the residence to serve a warrant to arrest 54-year-old James W. Filby, of Valparaiso, IN.  During the officer’s initial encounter with Filby, he met the officers outside the residence and produced a handgun.  Shots were fired by both Filby and an officer.  Filby sustained injuries that required him to be flown to Chicago by UCAN.  His current injury status is not known.

Filby was wanted on warrants on felony offenses of child molesting, vicarious sexual gratification, two counts of attempted sexual battery, and sexual battery,
