BEDFORD – The 2021 Claude Akins Memorial Golf Classic will be held Labor Day weekend, September 4th – September 5th. The event has been a long-standing tradition for 25 years.
The tournament hosted by the Bedford Recreation Foundation is a first-class atmosphere to provide enjoyment along with raising funds to help enhance the quality of life in the community. The support of this fun and exciting event helps Bedford Recreation Foundation’s mission to support worthwhile projects and provide current and future generations a place to enjoy.
Over the last 25 years, more than $850,000 was raised with more than $700,000 donated to worthwhile projects throughout the Bedford community.
Some of the projects supported include the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County, scholarships of Bedford North Lawrence High School, Lawrence County Aquatics, the Soccer Complex Pavillion, the Wilson Park Scoreboard, Wilson Park Playground equipment, local Special Olympics, 20-inch outdoor movie screen, and the Junior Golf Program.
Projects at Otis Park include stone picnic pavilion renovations, more than 50 new trees, new sod, bunker sand, and irrigation improvements. In addition, there were exterior renovations at the Club House, cart barn, and range Bball shed. New trash containers and water coolers were also purchased.
Improvements were also made along the cart paths and landscaping at Otis Park.
Plans to support other major projects partnering with the City of Bedford include renovations of the greens on the front and back nine holes, tees and bunkers, renovations to the Otis Park bathhouse, and Jim Flick Indoor Practice facilities, and Red Brick patio renovations.
In 2019, the Claude Akins Tournament was a huge success with 648 golfers competing with more than $44,000 raised.
