3-D Printer Build event held in the new Launching Center of the Teen Center

BEDFORD – The 3-D build event was held on Wednesday in the Launching Center of the Teen Center of the Boy and Girls Club of Lawrence County.

The event was held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with 21 members in grades 4th – 9th taking part in the event.

A total of 11 printers were built and four of the printers were given away at the conclusion of the event.

During the build event, members registered to win a printer. Their names were put in a hat with the lucky winner’s names being drawn.

During the build, the club served snacks and a lunch to all the attendees. The group made trinkets which included dice, little cats, dogs, wolves, and even baby Yoda’s.

Kim Brand of 1st Makerspace, the design partner of the new Launching Center, assisted the staff to facilitate this first build event.

The Launching Center was created using grants through the funds of an ROI grant.

Among the priorities the Launching Center hopes to achieve:

  1. Attract and train the region’s future workforce
  2. Expand technical trade programs and apprenticeships for youth
  3. Strengthen early soft skills development for K-12 students
  4. Develop youth-friendly recreational opportunities and amenities
  5. Expand broadband and WIFI access.

A compelling component of the project features a partnership with area industry employers who will provide expertise and input regarding in-demand jobs, training needed to fill positions, guide development of curriculum and pathways, and serve as mentors who will teach students applicable work skills
