Striking blow to the face warrants stitches and leads to arrest of Bedford man

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested on July 2, after Bedford Police officers responded to the 2600 block of R Street after receiving a 911 call.

Matthew Guthrie

When police arrived they found 41-year-old Matthew Guthrie to be intoxicated.

Guthrie had blood on his forearm and hands.

He told police his girlfriend had “took off and she’s bleeding”.

He told the officers she was bleeding from her mouth because he had to defend himself when the woman took a swing at him.

Officers found blood on the outside door to an apartment located at the rear of the property.

Officers entered that apartment after they knocked on the door with no response. They discovered additional blood on the north side of the house and blood at the entrance of the home.

Due to a large amount of blood and the potential that someone needed medical attention the officers then entered the house to the sound of running water.  They found the woman in the kitchen. She was bleeding from her mouth and left eyebrow.

She told police Guthrie had been drinking and was having an “alcohol-induced psychosis” and that the two of them had gotten into a verbal argument when he backhanded her across the face.

Guthrie told officers he didn’t want the woman at his home, but she refused to leave. He told the officers he did not hit the woman.

The woman was medically evaluated by an IU Health ambulance crew and transported to the hospital because she needed stitches to her lip and eyebrow.

Guthrie was arrested on a charge of domestic battery causing injury.

As officers escorted Guthrie into the jail, he resisted and blocked an officer which prevented the officer from opening the second security door into the jail. The officer removed Guthrie which allowed the door to open. Guthrie then preceded to walk into the jail without further incident.
