BNL’s Deckard, Moore, Kern share female Athlete of the Year

BNL’s Haley Deckard was a three-sport standout during her senior year for the Stars.

BEDFORD – Multi-sport seniors Haley Deckard and Makena Moore, and junior Carlee Kern, were named co-winners of Bedford North Lawrence’s female Athlete of the Year by the WBIW.com website.

All three excelled at three sports. Deckard was named honorable mention All-Hoosier Hills Conference in volleyball, averaged 3.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in a reserve role as BNL won a basketball sectional title, and hit .274 with 17 RBIs during the softball campaign.

Moore was a honorable mention all-league selection in soccer, played a reserve role for the Lady Stars (who finished 22-3 in basketball) and qualified for the IHSAA track regional in two events. Kern was honorable mention in the HHC for volleyball, contributed 1.3 points and 1.2 rebounds in basketball, and hit .358 with 4 home runs and 19 RBIs (plus scoring 36 runs) as the starting shortstop in softball for the regional champions.

Other notable athletes who enjoyed outstanding years included Sarah Stone (softball), Annie Waggoner (softball), Katherine West (soccer), Emma Gabhart (swimming), Chloe Spreen (basketball), Autumn Spence (cross country and track), Chloe McKnight (basketball) and Irye Gomez (basketball).

WBIW.com will list the top 10 stories of the 2020-21 school season. Austin Messmore was named the male Athlete of the Year.

BNL’s Carlee Kern was the starting shortstop in softball and excelled at three sports.
