Man arrested after hitting another man in the head with a baseball bat

OOLITIC – A Branchville man was arrested on a warrant Monday, after he struck a male in the head with a baseball bat on March 30, 2021.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the incident was reported in the 180 block of Lafayette Avenue, in Oolitic.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded and found a man standing in the doorway with blood covering his face and clothing.

Oolitic Volunteer Fire Department first responders and a Seals ambulance crew responded to treat the male’s injuries. The male did not want to be transported to the hospital.

Eric Kern

The female caller told police she had come home to do laundry and her brother’s friend 46-year-old Eric Kern came with her because she was scared of her husband.

While she was doing  laundry her husband came into the room to speak to her about their marriage.

She told Kern to hide in another room because she knew her husband would be mad if he found him there.

The couple talked for about 15 minutes. The male then went to the bedroom to get some clothes and when he turned on the light Kern hit him in the head with his son’s baseball bat.  The male put Kern in a headlock and that is when Kern started poking the man in the eyes. The male then told Kern he was going to call the police.

The woman then walked into the room and yelled at the two men to stop or she was going to call the police.

Kern got up and ran out the door and fled the scene.

The male was extremely agitated and had to be calmed down by officers multiple times and then became apologetic.

Neither the female or male wanted to file a battery affidavit.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of battery with a deadly weapon.
