Man arrested after police find him stumbling in roadway

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested Thursday after Bedford police were called to the area of 27th and Washington Avenue after a report of a man stumbling in the roadway.

Steve Pruett

When officers arrived they found 34-year-old Steven Pruett in the area of 30th Street and Washington Avenue and stopped to talk to him.

Pruett was stumbling around near the roadway. As Pruett stumbled into the roadway an oncoming vehicle had to swerve to miss striking him.

Police say Pruett smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and was carrying beer cans.

Pruett told the officers he was on his way to his sister’s house.

Officers finally were able to administer a portable breath test to Pruett and he blew 0.253 percent. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

Because officers located Pruett in the roadway and he could not stand without assistance he was detained for his own safety.

Officers did contact Pruett’s sister, however, she didn’t want Pruett at her home in that condition due to having children in her household.

Pruett was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.
