Make a fresh start with tobacco cessation

BLOOMINGTON – April showers may bring May flowers, but it can also be a great time to make a fresh start for your health goals. Specifically, it’s a great time to start anew on your goal of quitting tobacco.

“There are a lot more options for doing things to take your mind off of smoking as the weather warms up,” said IU Health Community Health Tobacco Prevention Coordinator Patricia Colon, MPH, CHES®. “When you start to feel that nagging itch from your preferred tobacco products, take a deep breath and focus on a fun outdoor activity instead.”

Weed your garden, take a long walk, shoot some hoops, have a socially distanced outdoor meet-up with friends, etc. Find something healthy to replace the addiction.

“By finding a healthy alternative, you’re helping your mental and physical health,” said Colon.

If you’d like to quit, free help is available at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or QuitNowIndiana.com. Young people interested in quitting vaping can text “DITCHVAPE” to 88709 to enroll in the free “This is Quitting” text messaging program.
