Flag Retirement Ceremony in Martin County Saturday May 15th

LOOGOOTEE – An American Flag retirement ceremony will be held Saturday, May 15th at 1 p.m. at the Martin County Community Building at the Martin County Fairgrounds on US 50 in Loogootee

The ceremony will be held in honor of the American Flag and Armed Forces Day.

The public is invited to attend.

Prior to the ceremony, flags may be dropped off anytime at the Shoals or Loogootee American Legion, or VFW. These organizations are familiar with flag retirement protocol and will take your flag and ensure that it is disposed of properly.

According to the United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8k, the flag should be retired when it is in such condition that is “no longer a fitting emblem for display” and should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning it and the ashes are buried.
