BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington Police Department is investigating the shooting death of 18-year-old Keisha Huntington, of Bloomington.
The incident happened at 12:16 a.m. Thursday in the 1400 block of North Woodburn Avenue. Police responded to the scene after a report of multiple shots fired.
According to Capt. Ryan Pedigo, as officers were en route, Central Emergency Dispatch received another call reporting an accident in front of La Bonita Restaurant & Market just north of this location.
When police arrived, they found a gray Honda had crashed into another parked vehicle and the driver of the Honda had been shot.
Officers immediately began rendering aid to Huntington until the arrival of ambulance personnel. She was then transported to the IU Health Bloomington Hospital where she later died.
Police recovered three 9mm shell casings in the parking lot of Northcrest Apartments on North Woodburn Avenue, which is where police say the shooting is believed to have occured.
Investigators interviewed several individuals.
Police believe Huntington was attempting to flee from the area after a 16-year-old tried to rob both her and a passenger in the car.
Police say Huntington was shot while driving away from the juvenile.
Investigators located the 16-year-old shooter at an apartment in the 900 block of North Rogers Street.
A negotiator with the Bloomington Police Department was able to contact the male via telephone and he surrendered without incident.
The male was transported to the Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village in Vincennes to be housed there while awaiting formal charging by the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office.
At this time, the name of the suspect is not being released due to his status as a juvenile offender and no further information is available to be released, as this is an ongoing investigation.
