(GREENCASTLE) – The Putnamville Correctional Facility “Shifting Gears” staff and offenders recently donated 14 bicycles to Woodrow Wilson Junior High School in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Shifting Gears is a bicycle restoration program located inside the Putnamville Correctional Facility. Offenders of the Shifting Gears program rebuilds and refurbishes bicycles in need of repair. Once refurbished, the bicycles are sent to local community agencies for children or adults who need transportation assistance.
“The bikes are for students who need bicycles. We focused on those students we see walking every day or those who mentioned they need a bicycle” commented Shelley Williams-Bennett, School Counselor at Woodrow Wilson.
Warden Dushan Zatecky said, “We are proud of the Shifting Gears program. The staff and offenders in the program have continuously worked hard to provide transportation to those in need. I applaud the way they serve the local community.”
