FAA Recognizes Indy Airport With Civil Rights Advocate Award

(INDIANAPOLIS) – The Federal Aviation Administration has recognized the Indianapolis Airport Authority with the 2020 Civil Rights Advocate and Partner Award. The honor acknowledges IAA’s excellence in serving passengers with disabilities and fulfilling the spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“I commend the entire IAA team for prioritizing ease of access and comfort for all of our travelers, regardless of ability,” said Barbara Glass, IAA board president. “Through our steadfast commitment to accessibility and investment in new ADA-compliant amenities, we are leading the way in ensuring our airport is welcoming for all who wish to fly.”

New amenities in operation or underway at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) include sensory rooms, accessible nursing mothers’ lounges, indoor pet relief areas for service animals, and accessible charging stations. These add to already available resources including accessible parking, wheelchair assistance, visual paging, Braille signage, TTY/TDD telephones, and more.

A list of resources available for passengers can be found at www.ind.com/civil-rights.

“As we reflect on the thirtieth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and celebrate the progress that has been made, we also realize there is more work to be done,” said Mario Rodriguez, IAA executive director. “I’m proud of our team’s dedication to providing more accessible amenities for travelers of all abilities. As we look to the future of our airport, inclusion will remain a key component of terminal upgrades.”

The awards ceremony will take place virtually August 4-5 during the 11th Annual FAA National Civil Rights Training Conference for Airports.

Last year the FAA also recognized IAA with the 2019 Title VI Program Civil Rights Advocate and Partner Award.

Additionally, in 2014, IND was awarded the Accessibility Award in the Mayor’s Access and Inclusion Awards. The Indy airport has also been honored with Best Airport in North America by Airports Council International eight years in a row, Top Domestic Airport by Travel + Leisure, Best Airport in North America by J.D. Power, and Best Airport in the United States by Condé Nast Traveler for six consecutive years. The Indy airport served a record 9.5 million passengers in 2019.
