Entries Being Accepted for 2020 Bloomington Trashion/Refashion Show

(BLOOMINGTON) – The 2020 Bloomington Trashion/Refashion Show is seeking design entries for its 11th annual show to be held Sunday, April 5, 2020, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

Cuidado! Olé! (2019). Flamenco-themed dress with caution tape corset and bath loofahs cascading down a
bed sheet skirt. Artist: Bettina Kehoe; Model: Rieken Isom.

Designers can submit up to a total of three designs in the Trashion or Refashion category. Designs need to consist of at least 90 percent refashioned or discarded materials. Trashion designs are produced using waste materials other than fabric.

Swirl of Snowflakes (2019). Blue dress with dryer sheet snowflakes, snowflake organza cape, and crown of
snowflakes, tinsel, and icicles. Artist: Tatyana Kuzmina; Model: Valeria Van Hoff.

Past years’ shows have included outfits constructed from phone books, campaign signs, drinking straws, CDs, roofing material, caution tape, and bath loofas.

Contaminated Crow (2019). Medical waste-themed ensemble with plastic syringe talons, an expired-pill staff,
and a grommeted beak and doctor’s hat. Artists: Josh and Lilah Streiff; Model: Lilah Streiff.

Refashion designs give new life to unworn or discarded garments and household textiles – including IU-themed clothing, scrubs, down vests, curtains, graduation gowns, prom dresses, silk saris, and life jackets.

Oh Wells (2019). Indiana University-themed ensemble from two reconstructed men’s shirts with hand-
embroidered Herman B Wells patch. Artist: Daisy May; Model: Aemilia Bohon.

Founded eleven years ago by former Bloomington resident and artist Jeanne Leimkuhler, the Trashion/Refashion show is produced by Discardia, a project of the Center for Sustainable Living.

The show serves and supports self-proclaimed and professional artists and designers while seeking to change beliefs and behaviors about the roles clothing plays in our lives.

Even the large-scale stage sets are designed out of recycled materials each year. A true grassroots event, Trashion/Refashion is all about community,
creativity, and sustainability. Models and designers of all ages and experience levels are encouraged, as are group submissions.

Detailed entry information, FAQs, rehearsal information, and the online submission form can be found here.

More photos and information can also be found at the Bloomington
Trashion Community Facebook page. Designers will be notified of their entry status soon after the February 21st deadline.
