Wendell E. Nikirk – Oolitic
Wendell Emerson Nikirk, 82, of Oolitic passed away on Wednesday at his residence.
Born on May 8, 1931, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Issac Nikirk and Lizzie (Butler) Nikirk. He married Ann Peavler Williams on Jan. 25 of 1957 and she preceded him in death.
Ann’s first husband died of polio in April of 1955. He raised her children and had two other children. Daughters are Cheryl Williams (Gary) Bryant of Bloomington, Linda Williams (Ron) Anderson of Bloomington, Vallerie Nikirk Smith of Oolitic, Wendy Nikirk (Steve) Butterfield of Oolitic.
He was preceded in death by his brother Walter Nikirk.
Surviving siblings are Elsie Webb and Warren Nikirk. Surviving half-siblings are Betty Spear, Kay Rathsman, Jerry Nikirk, and Mike Nikirk. He has four grandchildren Darbi Smith, Shelbi Smith, Brant Butterfield, and Hope Butterfield all of Oolitic. He had several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He graduated from Oolitic High School in 1949. He graduated with a BS in Education from Indiana University in 1961.
He served in the US Army 1955-1957 in Korea.
He is a current member of the American Legion, VFW, Kentucky Colonels, Masonic Temple (home lodge-White River 332, current lodge American Patriot 750).
He coached basketball and coached at Heltonville HS, Fayetteville HS, and Medora HS. He also taught at Bedford HS. He retired from West Washington Elementary where he was the assistant principal and guidance counselor.
He is the current Vice President of the North Lawrence Community Schools Board of Trustees. He has served on the board for 25 years. He served in the field of education for 60 years. He established and developed the Rolling Acres sub-division in 1963. He attended Fayetteville Baptist Church & Silverville Missionary Baptist Church.
He is a former member of the following: Homebuilders Association, Oolitic Town Board, Oolitic Kiwanis, National Teamsters Union, Indiana High School Coaches Association, National Education Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, Indiana School Board Association and Bedford Elks Club. He was a charter member of the Bedford Exchange Club and is a vested member of the Scottish Rite.
Funeral service will be at 1 pm on Monday at Cresthaven Mausoleum Chapel with Military Rights by the Bedford American Legion Gillen Post #33, Visitation will be Saturday at Schafer Auditorium (Bedford Middle School) 11 a.m. to 7 pm with a Masonic Services beginning at 6 pm.

Miriam Quinn – Shoals
Miriam Quinn, 79, of Shoals, was called home to rest on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at 8 a.m. at the Westview Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center. She was born on March 28, 1934 in Tell City, IN to Herbert and Blanche (Goble) Metz.
Miriam married Edgar Quinn on July 14, 1962 in Tell City. She was a devoted homemaker and loving mother.
She is deeply missed by her family including, husband Edgar, of Shoals; daughter, Pamela and her husband Robert Bratton, of Shoals; sons Scott and wife Pearl Quinn, of Shoals, James and wife Carlene Quinn, of Bloomington, Dan ad wife Dora Quinn, of Bedford; five grandchildren, Brandon, Danielle, Tristan, Lydia and Audrey; one great grandchild, Lucas; two sisters, Geneieve Olson, of Indianapolis and Lois Alexander, of Alabama.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Jasmine Folz and one brother Gobie Metz.
A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, October 14, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. She will be laid to rest in Emmons Ridge Cemetery.
