Lela Mae Bass – Mitchell
Lela Mae Bass of Mitchell passed away on Monday, November 29th at Bliss House in Bedford at the age of 93. Born in 1917 in Orange County to Ben and Jessie Purlee, she had been married to Paul Bass since 1941, was an elementary teacher for Mitchell Community Schools retiring in 1967 and had also taught for Vincennes University at the Mitchell Library. Lela was also a member of the Lawrence County Retired Teachers, was past president of Gamma Epsilon chapter of Tri Kappa and was a member of the Bedford Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. She is survived by her foster daughter, Kathy Harms; sisters, Evelyn Sorrells and Dorothy Coleman; one brother, Ben Purlee; as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, Mary Eversole. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, December 2nd at First Christian Church with burial to follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 4:00PM until 7:00PM on Wednesday at Chastain Funeral Home and from 10:00AM until the hour of service on Thursday at the church.
