Walter Smale, 80, Bedford

Walter L. Smale of Bedford, known to friends and family as “Shorty”, passed away Wednesday morning, November 18th at the age of 80.


Born in 1929 in Lawrence County to parents, Fred and Dorothy (Blackwell) Smale, he had been married to Mary A. Kelp since, 1950 and was a forklift operator at General Motors for 33 years, retiring in 1981, was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean War.
Walter attended Gulletts Creek Baptist Church, was a member of the Brown County Antique Tractor Association and U.A.W. Local #440.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Theresa Gerig and her husband Mike, Connie Franklin and her husband Ed; one son, Roger Smale and his wife Lynn; one brother, Harold “Eugene” Smale and his wife Mary; six grandchildren; one great grandson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Maxine Hedrick, Don Kelp and his wife Thelma, Dallas Kelp and his wife Barb, Jim Kelp and his wife Bev, Jerry Kelp and his wife Annie, Judie Schroeder and her husband Ken, John Kelp and his wife Judy as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 21st at 11:00AM from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with burial to follow in Judah Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3:00PM until 8:00PM on Friday, November 20th at Day & Carter Mortuary.
