Senator Banks announces new Vet center community access point in Kokomo

KOKOMO – Senator Jim Banks (R-Ind.) announced that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has established a new Vet Center community access point at Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 28 in Kokomo. The new location will bring confidential counseling and other support closer to veterans, service members, and military families across north-central Indiana.

The community access point, located at 3706 South LaFountaine Street, will be staffed by part-time veteran outreach program specialists who will provide counseling services and connect local veterans and their families with additional resources on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The Kokomo site marks the first step toward establishing a full-service Vet Center in north-central Indiana.

Senator Jim Banks

Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) said, “I’m proud to work with DAV to deliver counseling services to veterans, service members, and their families closer to home. The community access point in Kokomo is an important first step toward a permanent Vet Center in north-central Indiana. I’m grateful to Commander Ross Havrick and DAV Chapter 28 for leading this effort, and I’ll keep working with the VA to make a full Vet Center a reality.”

DAV Chapter 28 Commander Ross Havrick

DAV Chapter 28 Commander Ross Havrick said, “Our Veterans have already fought for the American people. They should never have to fight another battle to access the mental health care they deserve. This Community Access Point is an important step toward ensuring no veteran is left behind.”

Background:

DAV Chapter 28 and Commander Ross Havrick completed a feasibility assessment in May 2026 demonstrating the need for a Vet Center in the area. Banks presented the assessment to leaders of the VA’s Readjustment Counseling Service and then pressed the agency for a decision. In late October, the VA approved the community access point and entered into an agreement with DAV. Veterans and their families can contact Fort Wayne Vet Center Appointment Scheduling at (260) 460-1456 to learn about the Kokomo community access point and make counseling appointments. They can also contact DAV Chapter 28 at (765) 860-5042.

VA Vet Centers provide community-based readjustment counseling to eligible veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. Vet Centers are located separately from VA medical centers and benefits offices to help protect confidentiality, improve accessibility, and reduce barriers to care. Services are provided at no cost to eligible veterans, service members, and their families.

Veterans seeking care at another Indiana location can use the VA’s national Vet Center Directory. Vet Center counselors are also available toll-free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 877-927-8387.
