Bedford Recreation Foundation boosts local youth programs with Annual Claude Akins Memorial Golf Classic proceeds

BEDFORD — The Bedford Recreation Foundation presented several local youth and community organizations with financial contributions following another successful fundraising push through its annual golf tournament.

The foundation raised $60,000 during the annual Claude Akins Memorial Golf Classic, held over Labor Day weekend at Otis Park Golf Course. On Thursday, BRF board members presented donations totaling $4,250 to three area initiatives:

Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County: CPO Frank Decker accepted a $2,000 donation on Oct. 22 to support ongoing club programming. The contribution stems from proceeds collected during the “Try 4 Dye” Contest on Hole #17 during the tournament.

Lawrence County Aquatics: BRF presented $1,750 on Oct. 22 at the Bedford North Lawrence High School pool to aid swim safety programs and youth development. The amount represents team picture proceeds generated during the tournament, which were matched dollar-for-dollar alongside additional funds by the BRF.

Knights of Columbus Council #1166: BRF President Tom Elliott and Golf Chairman Joe Elliott presented $500 on Oct. 28 to support the 49th annual Tootsie Roll Drive. The funding will supplement drive proceeds directed to the Lawrence County Special Olympics, local ARC programs, and special education students across area school districts.

Since its inception, the Claude Akins Memorial Golf Classic has served as BRF’s primary fundraiser to enhance recreational facilities and support local youth organizations across Lawrence County.
