PAOLI — Local fire crews in Orange County responded to a major residential fire early Wednesday morning that left a two-story home heavily damaged and required a multi-department mutual aid response.

According to a social media report from Paoli, Indiana First Responders, units from Paoli Fire, Southeast Fire, and Medic 502 were dispatched to a house fire in the 1000 block of Unionville Road at approximately 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday. Responding firefighters noted that the glow from the intense blaze was visible from the town limits before units even arrived on the scene, where they found the front of a two-story home fully engulfed in flames.

Initial efforts to combat the fire from the interior were quickly halted due to extreme heat, heavy smoke, and dangerous structural conditions when the building’s floor began to collapse into the basement. For the safety of emergency personnel, incident commanders ordered an immediate transition to an exterior, defensive attack.

Because of the rural location’s distance from standard municipal water infrastructure, additional support was required to shuttle water to the site. Orange County Rural District 1 and Livonia Fire were called in to provide crucial tanker support, while the Springs Valley Fire Department was placed on standby to cover the town of Paoli during the incident.

Authorities have not yet determined the origin or cause of the fire. The investigation remains active and ongoing as fire officials work to examine the heavily damaged structure.
