A life-saving team effort: Yorktown High School freshman and staff honored by school board

YORKTOWN — A routine day at Yorktown High School turned into a life-saving mission after a quick-thinking freshman stepped up during a medical crisis. Here is a breakdown of what happened, how the community responded, and who was recognized for their heroism.

On September 22, Yorktown High School in-school suspension (ISS) supervisor Melvin Kelly suffered a sudden, severe heart attack while sitting at his desk. Kelly lost consciousness, stopped responding, and had effectively died before being revived by emergency responders and school staff.

Michael Hudson, a freshman serving in-school suspension at the time, noticed Kelly wheezing and collapsing at his desk. When Kelly failed to respond, Hudson immediately ran out of the room to locate teachers and staff members who had the equipment and training needed to administer emergency medical aid. Medical evaluations later confirmed that Kelly likely would not have survived without Hudson’s immediate intervention.

During a Yorktown Community School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Greg Hinshaw formally honored Hudson and several staff members for their life-saving efforts. Hinshaw commended the group’s coordinated response, calling the successful outcome a major win for the entire school district.

The district officially expressed its gratitude to seven individuals who responded on September 22:

  • Michael Hudson — Student
  • Stacey Brewer — Principal
  • Brooke Wagner — Registered Nurse
  • Brad Hess — Teacher
  • Kyanne Trissel — Instructional Assistant
  • Debbie Stone — Secretary
  • Jen Carrier — Secretary

The board meeting marked the first time Kelly was able to reunite with his colleagues and students since the emergency. Kelly, who is known locally for his work mentoring youth through his nonprofit, Brothers 2 Brothers United, shared that the overwhelming support from the community reminded him how much people care. He added that the experience gave him a renewed perspective on life as he prepares for a previously planned retirement.
