The holiday toys adults and kids may be competing for this Christmas

INDIANA — As the holiday shopping season approaches, parents looking to cross off their children’s Christmas wish lists may find themselves vying for the same items as adult collectors. Driven by nostalgia, fan culture, and sensory appeal, adults have become a central powerhouse in the global toy market.

According to Circana’s 2026 report, U.S. toy sales jumped 17% during the first half of the year, marking the industry’s strongest first-half performance in six years. Trading cards, collectibles, licensed media products, and fandom-driven merchandise fueled the sharp surge. Remarkably, consumers aged 18 and older accounted for 35% of total U.S. toy-industry growth through April.

At the same time, Toy Insider’s holiday trend preview highlighted several key categories that are captivating both younger shoppers and adult “kidults”: sensory products, mystery blind boxes, nostalgic brands, and arcade-inspired toys.

Parents may be surprised to find that they’re competing with adult collectors for the same Christmas toys. A toy doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated to become popular. Familiar characters, mystery designs, and limited editions can attract buyers of all ages. But shoppers should remember that a toy being hard to find today doesn’t mean it will be worth more tomorrow.

What Toys Are Bridging the Generational Gap?

Several prize and gift categories are drawing high demand across all age groups this season:

  • Character Plushies & Mini Figures: Globally recognized characters like Pokémon and Hello Kitty continue to attract cross-generational fans, especially when featured in seasonal runs or limited-edition variants.
  • Blind Boxes & Mystery Collectibles: The thrill of unboxing adds a layer of gamified excitement as both kids and adult hobbyists hunt for rare chase figures or missing items to complete set runs.
  • Trading Cards: Cards hold appeal across demographics for different reasons. Younger fans often enjoy trading and gameplay, while adult collectors target specialized artwork and hard-to-find serial prints.
  • Squishy Toys & Charms: Everyday tactile items offer functional, displayable, or portable enjoyment for all age groups.

An item does not need to be large or costly to command high demand. Unique designs, classic characters, and limited releases can instantly make even small items highly sought-after.

What Makes a Toy Craze Last?

While viral social media trends can turn an obscure toy into an overnight sensation, long-term popularity requires deeper roots.

According to Donner, established character heritage, genuine nostalgia, and collectible depth help products sustain interest long after temporary internet trends fade.

A toy that becomes popular overnight may lose attention just as quickly. However, established characters can continue attracting buyers through new releases, movies, and returning fans.
