INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Indiana Governor Mike Braun announced the next phase of the August disaster recovery, a housing strategy for displaced Hoosiers from the severe weather and flooding.
“For many impacted Hoosiers and communities, long‑term living solutions are a vital piece of the recovery puzzle and a key step toward rebuilding,” said Gov. Braun. “At my direction, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security is leading shelter transition support for survivors. My top priority is ensuring survivors have safe and secure housing.”
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) is advancing a coordinated housing strategy focused on transitioning disaster survivors from the existing State hotel voucher program into appropriate sheltering and longer-term living solutions.
Caseworkers from Tidal Basin, the contractor working with the state, will be contacting eligible survivors directly to assist them with this transition.
The State will prioritize available housing resources, including FEMA Rental Assistance, to help eligible households move from emergency sheltering into more stable housing. Hoosiers who are unable to live in their home because of damage caused by the August storms may be eligible to receive rental assistance from FEMA. The money helps cover the cost of rent for up to 18 months while repairs are being made to the home.
Traditional housing options may not meet every family’s needs, particularly for households with significant home damage or limited access to available rental housing. IDHS is working with FEMA to request additional anticipated support for these families, which may include home repairs or direct housing assistance.
To find out if you are eligible for rental assistance, or if you have any unmet needs, complete a FEMA application online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362. The FEMA deadline for Individual Assistance is Oct. 25, 2026.
