Bloomington man identified, charged with murder in fatal shooting

BLOOMINGTON — A 23-year-old man has been identified and charged with murder following a fatal shooting in Bloomington Thursday night that left 24-year-old Noah Slinkard dead.

Jaymon Gilreath was charged with murder Friday, according to the Bloomington Police Department.

Officers responded to a reported shooting at approximately 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the 1000 block of North Illinois Street. Upon arrival, officers found Slinkard lying near the front door of an apartment with a gunshot wound to the head.

Slinkard was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:49 p.m.

According to investigators, Slinkard was sitting on the front porch of a residence with another man when Gilreath allegedly approached on foot and shot him before leaving the scene.

Police located Gilreath at approximately 8:23 p.m. and took him into custody without incident. Investigators later recovered a handgun in a holster near a bench in the 1300 block of West 13th Street, next to Crestmont Park. The firearm is believed to be connected to the shooting.

According to police, witnesses told investigators that Gilreath believed Slinkard was in a relationship with his ex-girlfriend.

Gilreath was arrested on the murder charge shortly after midnight Friday at IU Health Bloomington Hospital and later transported to the Monroe County Jail.

Gilreath is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
