JACKSON COUNTY — Jackson County Recycles is providing residents with two opportunities to safely destroy outdated documents and safeguard their personal information during free shredding events scheduled later this month.

The upcoming document destruction opportunities are designed to help local community members safely dispose of sensitive paperwork—such as financial records, tax documents, and personal medical files—to prevent identity theft and fraud.
Schedule of Events
The first session takes place this week in Brownstown, followed by a late-afternoon event in Seymour:
- Brownstown: Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. behind the Subway restaurant.
- Seymour: Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Re/Max parking lot.
Best Practices for Document Shredding
Local recycling and security officials advise residents to keep several guidelines in mind when preparing materials for shredding:
- Identify High-Risk Documents: Focus on items containing personal identifying information, including bank statements, canceled checks, Social Security materials, tax forms, and credit applications.
- Remove Non-Paper Items: While standard staples and small paper clips are typically accepted by commercial shredders, binder clips, heavy metal bindings, and plastic sheet protectors should be removed prior to arrival.
- Transport Papers Cleanly: Keep documents organized in sturdy cardboard boxes or paper bags for quick unloading by event staff.
