Did You Know Certain Life Changes Can Affect Your SSI Payments?

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients are being reminded to promptly report life, financial, and household changes to avoid payment disruptions, potential penalties, or unexpected debts.

According to Social Security guidelines, updates to income, assets, living situations, or personal details directly impact both an individual’s ongoing eligibility and monthly benefit amounts. Timely reporting ensures payments remain accurate, preventing overpayments that must be repaid later or underpayments that shortchange beneficiaries.

The reporting requirement extends beyond the primary beneficiary: married individuals living with a spouse must report changes affecting their partner, while parents applying on behalf of a child must report relevant updates within the household.

Key Changes Beneficiaries Must Report

Recipients are required to inform Social Security whenever significant updates occur, including:

  • Income Updates: Any fluctuations in wages, pensions, unemployment benefits, or other income sources.
  • Asset & Resource Changes: Modifications to bank accounts, vehicles, or property holdings.
  • Employment Status: Starting, ending, or switching jobs.
  • Address Updates: Maintaining current mailing records to avoid missing vital notices and facing benefit holds.
  • Living Arrangements: Household moves, changes in who resides in the home, or entries into/deliveries from nursing facilities or correctional institutions.
  • Legal & Marital Status: Changes in marital status (marriage, divorce, or separation) or immigration/citizenship status.

How and When to Submit Reports

Reporting guidelines emphasize distinct channels for general life updates versus monthly work wages:

General Updates

For changes unrelated to job earnings, individuals can contact Social Security directly at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., or visit a local office.

Monthly Wage Reporting

Working beneficiaries can report monthly earnings through several convenient tools:

  1. Payroll Information Exchange (PIE): Employers send earnings directly to Social Security after the beneficiary completes Form SSA-8240 (online, in-person, or via phone). Standard reporting must continue until PIE activation is confirmed.
  2. Online & Mobile: Submit earnings through a personal my Social Security account, the SSA Mobile Wage Reporting app, or the automated Telephone Wage Reporting system.
  3. In-Person or Phone: Contact a local office or call 1-800-772-1213.

Note on Work Changes: Before using automated wage-reporting systems—or whenever changing employers—beneficiaries must first contact Social Security to register the new employer’s details and Employer Identification Number (EIN). Beneficiaries can also sign up for monthly automated text or email reminders.

Important Deadlines

To minimize processing delays and avoid administrative penalties that can lower monthly checks, beneficiaries should observe two main monthly deadlines:

  • 6th of the Month: Target date for reporting job wages earned during the previous month to best avoid overpayment risks.
  • 10th of the Month: Final deadline following any reportable event or wage distribution to submit updates on time.
