BLOOMINGTON — Local landowners and natural resource enthusiasts can gain practical, hands-on experience in land management during a free “Learn-N-Burn” workshop scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026.
The educational event will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. EST at the Nesbit Property, located at 3685 E. Robinson Road in Bloomington.

Interactive Prescribed Fire Training
Designed to provide direct instruction on the safe and effective use of controlled burns, the workshop will cover three core areas:
- Burn Planning: Developing comprehensive strategies for safe execution.
- Equipment: Guidance on essential gear and tools required for controlled fires.
- Burn Techniques: Practical methods for managing land and wildlife habitat.
Required Gear & Preparation
Organizers advise all participants to come prepared for active outdoor training. Attendees should bring or wear:
- Natural-Fiber Clothing: All cotton and wool clothing only; synthetic fibers are strictly prohibited for safety.
- Protective Gear: Leather boots, work gloves, and safety glasses.
- Personal Supplies: A pen, notebook, personal water supply, and snacks.

The event is supported by several local and regional conservation organizations, including Purdue Extension Forestry and Natural Resources, the Southern Indiana Sentinel Landscape, USDA, the Indiana Prescribed Fire Council, and the Sam Shine Foundation.
