BEDFORD — The City of Bedford Utilities Department will begin its autumn fire hydrant flushing program on Sunday night, Sept. 27, 2026. The maintenance work is tentatively scheduled to run through Thursday night, Oct. 8, 2026.
Bedford Utilities Director Misty Adams noted that the flushing schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions or if daily work assignments are delayed. If severe weather occurs, flushing operations will be canceled.
During flushing operations, water customers across the city may experience temporary fluctuations in water pressure or slight discoloration in their tap water.
City officials advise residents who notice discolored water to run their cold water taps until the water clears. Customers are also strongly encouraged to postpone laundry and limit hot water usage until their cold water runs clear to prevent sediment from entering home water heaters or staining clothing.
Tentative Flushing Schedule
Flushing will take place during overnight hours according to the following geographic schedule:
- Sunday Night, Sept. 27 – Monday Night, Sept. 28: Everything south of 19th Street and west of Mitchell Road, including Broadview Addition, Fresenius Medical Care, St. Vincent Dunn Hospital, Garden Villa, Bliss House, and Stonebridge.
- Tuesday Night, Sept. 29 – Wednesday Night, Sept. 30: 16th Street west of M Street, Edgewood Addition, IU Health Bedford, Bex Addition, and Westview Manor.
- Thursday Night, Oct. 1 – Sunday Night, Oct. 4: Areas east of Mitchell Road and south of 16th Street, including Brook Knoll, Glen Meadows, Shandell Drive, and Core Nursing Home.
- Monday Night, Oct. 5 – Tuesday Night, Oct. 6: John Williams Boulevard, all of Lincoln Avenue, 15th Street and M Street west, and 8th Street south to 16th Street.
- Wednesday Night, Oct. 7 – Thursday Night, Oct. 8: Areas east of Lincoln Avenue and north of 15th Street.
