INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Mike Braun traveled across Indiana last week to meet with local elected officials, assess storm recovery efforts in Madison County, congratulate the 2027 Indiana Teacher of the Year, and thank the team at Cultivate Food Rescue in South Bend for their work.
“One of the best parts about serving as Governor is traveling across Indiana and meeting the Hoosiers making a difference in their local communities. This week, I continued to visit Hoosiers recovering from August’s severe weather, celebrated an outstanding Indiana teacher, met with local leaders, and visited an organization working to feed Hoosiers in need,” said Governor Mike Braun.
Governor Braun traveled to Anderson to assess ongoing recovery efforts in Madison County and thank those assisting Hoosiers in need. Governor Braun viewed homes that were flooded and cleanup efforts along Milton Avenue and Alexandria Pike before visiting with the Tarvin family, whose home was affected by the storm.
Governor Braun was then joined by Indiana Department of Homeland Security Executive Director Jonathan Whitham to meet with Anderson Mayor Thomas Broderick, Madison County Commissioners Olivia Pratt, John Richwine and Rick Gardner, Madison County Administrator Tom Ecker, and others involved in the recovery effort. The group discussed future recovery needs and state and FEMA assistance.
On Wednesday, Governor Braun traveled to Homestead High School in Fort Wayne to announce Jason Witzigreuter as the 2027 Indiana Teacher of the Year. Witzigreuter, the Associate Director of Bands at Homestead High School, was selected from more than 65,000 teachers across Indiana.
While traveling in Northeast Indiana, Governor Braun stopped at Grounded Coffee House in Ligonier to meet with Kendallville Mayor Lance Waters and Ligonier Mayor Bryan Shearer.
In South Bend, Governor Braun visited Cultivate Food Rescue for a roundtable and tour. This not-for-profit works to address hunger in northern Indiana through food rescue and programs, and has redistributed 11.5 million pounds of food throughout St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall Counties. Governor Braun thanked them for their hard work to feed Hoosiers.
Throughout the severe weather, Governor Mike Braun has taken decisive action to ensure Hoosiers do not go hungry, including last week announcing a federally authorized waiver—secured at the Governor’s request—allowing Indiana to automatically replace a portion of monthly SNAP benefits for recipients.
