BEDFORD — Bedford Middle School is taking steps to expand career exploration opportunities for students through the RIASEC career framework.
As part of a Career Coaching Grant, BMS Instructional Coach Heidi Atchison, seventh-grade Exploring College and Careers teacher Maggi Snack, eighth-grade Preparation for College and Careers teacher Madyson Stephenson, and NLCS Career Coach Kylie Gilbertson recently attended RIASEC training hosted by ROI at Edgewood Schools.
RIASEC is designed to help students better understand their interests and how those interests may connect to future careers. The framework focuses on six career themes: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.
The BMS team used the training to explore ways RIASEC can be introduced to students in grades K-12. The group also began developing a plan for incorporating the framework at Bedford Middle School.
Moving forward, BMS plans to use RIASEC through classroom activities, career discussions and other career exploration opportunities throughout the school year.
The program is intended to give students an early opportunity to recognize their strengths and interests while learning about careers that may align with them.
Through the new approach, BMS hopes students will begin thinking about an important question as they consider their futures: “Who am I, and where could my interests take me?”
